Lesson Plans for the Week of Pentecost
(June 7-13)
Copywork and dictation selections are included within this post.
We now approach the Great Feast of Pentecost, the last feast of the Divine Economy. It was on the Sunday of Pentecost that the Holy Spirit descended upon the those gathered together in the Upper Room. In reference to this feast, St. Nicodemus the Hagiorite points out the central position of Sunday in the salvation of man. The creation of the world began with the creation of Light on a Sunday, the first day of the week. The Resurrection of Christ, the renewal of fallen creation, took place on a Sunday as did the completion of creation, the descent of the Holy Spirit into the hearts of man.
The purpose of the Christian life, the acquisition of the Holy Spirit, is offered to us through this Great Feast. As Metropolitan of Nafpaktos Hierotheos writes in The Feasts of the Lord,
The purpose of the Incarnation of the Son of God is for men to receive the Holy Spirit and become members of the Body of Christ, and thus to become dwelling-places of the Triune God. This is why the participation of the Holy Spirit, through which we become living members of the Church, living members of the Body of Christ, and have communion with the Triune God,
is the purpose of the spiritual life.
The Main Lesson Book
Because we are celebrating one of the Twelve Great Feasts, we will return to our handcraft of handmade felt figures to be used in narrating the account from Scripture. Details of this handcraft can be found in the lesson plan post for the Sunday of the Myrrhbearing Women. If you chose to craft for this feast, photographs can be preserved in the main lesson book.
